Porter’s Liniment Salve, created in 1916 by the George H. Rundle Company in Piqua, Ohio, was originally known as Porter’s Pain King Salve but was later renamed due to a request from the FDA. This salve was sold door-to-door by traveling salesmen and did not rely on formal advertising for sales. Instead, satisfied customers spread the word about its soothing and healing properties. Porter’s Salve is a beneficial application for bruises, rough and cracked skin caused by inclement weather, insect bites, sunburn, and local irritations. It contains chlorobutanol, cresylic acid, zinc oxide, camphor, ammonia, and oils of clove, sassafras, and myrrh in a base of petrolatum, beeswax, and lanolin.
The salve has gained popularity throughout the United States, Canada, and many countries abroad, with its drawing quality being particularly effective on slivers of metal, wood, or glass beneath the skin's surface. Despite minimal advertising, Porter’s Liniment Salve has earned a loyal customer base and continues to attract new customers through word-of-mouth recommendations. It comes in 2 oz tins and is made by a small family company in Ohio, USA, using the original, time-tested formula since 1871.
